Just like humans, objects and buildings need a skeleton too.
He is most famous for the Eiffel Tower in Paris, which is one of the most known buildings across the globe. He is originally a bridge designer, his first project being a railway bridge in Bordeaux.
After knowing this you can clearly see elements of a bridge in the structure of the Eiffel tower. During the design stage of the tower people were shocked by its daring shape and height. People thought Gustave wanted to create something artistic without regard to the engineering, but Gustave and his team were experienced bridge builders.
Building the tallest structure in the world was almost like bridging a gap. Gustave realised that wind would be a major factor affecting its design due to the height but building a structurally good artistic tower would be very difficult.
Building a m structure in was insane especially at this weight and height. Gustave had almost achieved the impossible creating a structure so artistic yet a structural masterpiece, it almost like an installation piece of art.
The only non-structural elements are the 4 arches on either side of the tower, these were designed by Stephen Sauvestre to reassure the public that it was safe.
Every other bit of the tower is completely structural. This is what Gustave wanted to show that a building cannot just look good, but can also be good. This is why I chose this piece and artist as I want to show structural integrity in my work whilst looking admirable.
